Three Useful Turf Cleaning Tips After a Skunk Sprays Your Lawn

The smell of a skunk is unmistakable. It’s unpleasant to experience out in public, but it’s even more frustrating in your own backyard.

If your artificial grass has been sprayed by a skunk, the odor can have your family avoiding the yard for days. Thankfully, there are a few cleaning tips you can use to help eliminate skunk spray and get you back outdoors.

Choose Artificial Turf That’s Skunk-Resistant

Today’s artificial turf technology is remarkably advanced. Unlike the Astroturf of the past, modern synthetic grass is designed with homeowners in mind. Manufacturers now make synthetic turf with incredibly efficient drainage systems that help wash away materials like pet waste.

Good drainage also helps your artificial grass eliminate odors from skunk spray. Pet turf is especially efficient at draining away skunk spray, as it’s designed to eliminate liquid waste. While you’ll still need some clean-up, your artificial turf is likely already skunk-resistant on some level.

Use What’s In Your Kitchen

Even with pet turf, you’ll still need to do a bit of work to eliminate the skunk spray. If you’re short on time, there are a few tried-and-true home remedies to get rid of the smell.

If you have tomato juice on-hand, try letting some soak on your turf for around 10 to 20 minutes – the acid can help neutralize the chemicals that cause skunk odor.

Don’t have tomato juice in your pantry? Mix a quart of hydrogen peroxide with a teaspoon of liquid dish soap and ¼ cup of baking soda and pour it onto the affected areas of your turf. This DIY method used by the Humane Society can help to break down skunk spray. Just don’t let it sit too long before rinsing with water – the peroxide can fade and damage your blades if left for more than a few minutes.
