What are the Most Common Stains That Require Turf Cleaning?

Artificial turf is a great low-maintenance alternative to natural grass. While synthetic grass saves you countless hours of mowing, watering and fertilizing, it can’t break down spilled drinks and dropped gum like natural turf.

Artificial grass maintenance services are the No. 1 way to preserve your turf – but messes don’t always happen right before your next CleanTurf appointment! To help you keep your new landscaping in mint condition, we’ve broken down the four most common turf stains and how to remove them.

Food & Beverage Spills

Hosting the next neighborhood barbeque? Food and drink spills are two of the most common causes of artificial turf stains. Thankfully, these spills are typically water-based and easy to clean up.

After soaking up as much of the spill as possible with a rag, use a soapy sponge to remove the rest. If the spill has been sitting for a while and has hardened, a gentle scrub with a toothbrush should do the trick!

Oil Spills

Oil-based stains can sometimes require a little more elbow grease to remove. Start by using the dish soap and sponge method – if there’s still residue left behind, apply mineral spirits. This versatile cleaner does a great job of removing oil spills; just make sure to rinse your turf with water afterward to remove any extra product.

Chewing Gum

If you find a stuck piece of gum on the blades of your synthetic grass, you’re not doomed to look at it forever (or cut out a chunk of your lawn!).

Apply a cooling agent, such as an ice cube of a piece of dry ice, to the affected area of your turf. Then, use a plastic knife to gently scrape off the gum. Use a sponge and soapy water to eliminate any remaining residue, and your turf will be as good as new.

Pet Stains

Cleaning up pet waste is crucial to prevent stains and odors on your artificial grass. After removing solid waste, rinse your lawn with soapy water. You’ll want to finish the cleanup process with a disinfectant spray that will kill any remaining bacteria.
